Liverpool’s need for a defensive midfielder was highlighted in the draw at Newcastle United, with their current options often inclined to push forward.
Andoni Iraola suggested the solution may be for the team to “adapt,” rather than relying on a new signing. “It’s not just personnel,” Iraola said after the match.

“I don’t want us to take that from his game but we have to adapt as a team to these situations. We have to know these situations can happen.
“For the first one I think we should just finish the great chance we created. We were on the edge of the box with a clear situation to shoot, but we didn’t and then you have to give credit to Elanga for winning the race.”
Reports have maintained that a midfielder is not currently a priority, with Liverpool focused on strengthening their wide options before the September 1 deadline.
Bournemouth’s Alex Scott has been linked with the Reds and is reportedly a top target for the defensive midfield role at Anfield.
Chelsea previously had a £64million bid rejected for the England international, who has also attracted interest from Manchester City.
According to Sky Sports, Bournemouth remain adamant that Scott is not for sale and will reject offers for him this summer. The midfielder has two years remaining on his contract but has turned down offers of a new deal.
Manchester City are considering a late move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Should Chelsea refuse to sell the Argentine, Scott could emerge as an alternative target for Enzo Maresca’s side.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough Premier League campaign last season and went with England’s pre-World Cup training group to the United States.
Liverpool may have to wait until next summer to pursue him, but that would be far from ideal as Iraola looks to strengthen his midfield now.
Scott has racked up over 90 appearances since joining Bournemouth from Bristol City in August 2023, contributing six goals and five assists across all competitions.
