Manchester City’s summer of sweeping change has produced another significant departure as Nico González brings his time at the Etihad Stadium to a close with a move to Newcastle United.
It has been a summer unlike many others in recent memory in east Manchester as the post-Pep Guardiola era under Enzo Maresca kicks off with a period of near-unprecedented upheaval.
A constant stream of comings and goings have taken place throughout the summer months and has been steadily reshaping a playing squad looking ahead to a new chapter in the club’s history.
Amid all of that upheaval, Manchester City have now confirmed yet another exit from their first-team ranks while Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi have come into the club’s engine room, following a fourth senior midfielder having now departed.
Nico González joins Newcastle United
Nico González has left Manchester City to join Newcastle United on a permanent deal, bringing to an end an 18-month stay at the Etihad Stadium.
The Spaniard arrived from FC Porto in January 2025 and, across his time with the Blues, went on to make 59 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with four goals.
A technically accomplished, deep-lying defensive midfielder, González looked for a time like he could be Rodri’s heir and his departure has left many Manchester City fans wondering what exactly went wrong.
The 24-year-old played his part in the domestic cup double of last season, contributing to both the 2026 Carabao Cup and FA Cup triumphs - most dramatically by providing an incredible winner in the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton.
Now, though, he is set to embark on a fresh challenge on Tyneside.
Nico bids farewell to Manchester City
Speaking to the club’s official channels ahead of his departure, González offered an honest explanation for his decision to move on in search of regular football.
“It has been a privilege to be part of Manchester City,” González said. “It’s hard to understand from the outside what an amazing club this is. The management, the players, the coaches, the staff and the fans make it incredibly special.
“It really has been an honour to play for this team. I’ve loved my time here, but I have a desire to play more often. I can honestly say, though, I leave with nothing but love and gratitude for City.”
His affection for the club aligns with recent reports from the days leading up to this transfer, which claimed that Nico González had tried to fight for his place at the Etihad Stadium this summer before finally accepting the need to move on in the final days of the window.
The midfielder went on to thank all those he worked alongside during his time in Manchester, signing off with his best wishes for the campaign ahead.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my team-mates, the staff and the City fans who have been so supportive and helpful to me throughout my time in Manchester,” he added. “I want to wish the team nothing but the best looking to this season and in the future.”
Hugo Viana leads Manchester City tribute
Director of Football Hugo Viana was similarly warm in his assessment, paying tribute to González’ contribution on the club’s official site.
“Nico has been the consummate professional throughout his time at Manchester City,” Viana said. “He always set the highest standards both on and off the pitch and he can also be proud of having played a very big part in both of our Cup successes last season.
“We would like to thank Nico for his contribution to the Club, and we wish him the very best as he now embarks on the next chapter of his career.”
Nico González follows Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders and Bernardo Silva out of the door in a dramatic overhaul of the Manchester City midfield, with Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi the two names who have already arrived to freshen up the centre of the pitch.
For the Spaniard, a move to an ambitious Newcastle side offers the platform to play the regular football he craves - and at the Etihad Stadium, the question is no longer whether a new midfielder arrives, but who they will be.
Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez is currently top of the list of likely additions, and with the window closing next week, it won’t be long before City fans find out either way.
