A lot of people didn’t think Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers would amount to much last year. While they still failed to win a playoff game, the season could’ve been worse. Rodgers helped the Steelers win the AFC North for the first time since 2020, which was a solid accomplishment.
However, Rodgers has more that he wants to accomplish with the Steelers, which is why he re-signed with them this offseason. People are doubting them again, but not CBS announcer Jim Nantz.
“I wish [Rodgers] a great year,” Nantz said recently on NFL on CBS’ YouTube channel. “I’d like to see it really come together for Aaron. It would be something. I think he’s capable of it. I like what they’ve done in the offseason.
“Mike Tomlin’s awesome, but for Mike McCarthy to be reunited with him, let’s see what happens there in the Steel City. I like their pickup of Michael Pittman in the offseason to go against DK Metcalf on the other side. That’s a pretty strong set of receivers. I’m expecting good things out of Pittsburgh and Aaron.”
Not everyone is as optimistic about Rodgers and the Steelers as Nantz, but there are reasons to believe that Pittsburgh can improve on what it did last year.
For example, McCarthy taking over for Tomlin could be huge. Tomlin was the Steelers’ head coach for almost 20 years, and while he had a lot of success, things were starting to feel stale with him in charge.
McCarthy has also been in the NFL for a while, but he’s got a different background than Tomlin. While Tomlin was more defensive minded, McCarthy’s history is on the offensive side of the ball. The Steelers have struggled offensively for years, and McCarthy could help fix that.
Also, the Steelers made some nice additions this offseason. Nantz mentioned Pittman, and the Steelers also signed solid players like Jamel Dean, Jaquan Brisker, and Rico Dowdle. They had a big draft class this year as well, making 10 total picks.
Yes, Rodgers is 42 years old, but he looked like he had gas left in the tank last year. The Steelers could finally break out of the cycle of mediocrity that they’ve been stuck in recently. It’s hard to say whether or not they’ll be serious Super Bowl contenders, but maybe they’ll finally win a playoff game. That wouldn’t be the worst way for Rodgers to end his career.
