The Earthquakes are bringing in another creative player as they seek to stop their midseason downturn.
San Jose traded for St. Louis CITY SC’s Eduard Löwen on Thursday, bolstering their midfield with a player who has 47 goal contributions in 84 league games since arriving to MLS in 2022. In exchange, St. Louis received $425,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money, with an additional $500,000 in incentives.
“Eduard is a proven player in this league with the versatility and experience to make an impact in our midfield,” Earthquakes coach Bruce Arena said in a release. “Beyond what he brings on the field, he’s a great person with strong character and leadership qualities.”
The Quakes are desperate for fresh energy as they have five losses, one draw and no wins since returning from the World Cup break in late July. They entered the season pause tied atop the West with Vancouver after winning their last game before the break, but they still have won just once since the end of April.
Löwen, a Designated Player, has signed a new deal through the 2027-28 season. He has three goals and three assists in 13 appearances this season, as well as 20 goals and 27 assists in 84 MLS games through his career.
He missed the beginning of this season with St. Louis after the death of his wife, Ilona, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2024.
“I‘m excited to build new relationships here in the community and am determined to help this team make a strong playoff push and be successful with this historic club,” Löwen, 29, said in a team release.
He had an assist in St. Louis’ 3-1 win earlier this month at PayPal Park over the Quakes.
Löwen began his career with FC Nürnberg and played for Hertha Berlin, FC Augsburg and VfL Bochum in the German Bundesliga before making the leap to MLS.
He will be available for selection when the Quakes play Saturday in Houston against the Dynamo.
