Alabama football turns the page to the Keelon Russell era behind center. Russell beat out Austin Mack for the coveted starting quarterback spot. But now ESPN analyst and one-time NFL executive Louis Riddick placed a massive burden on Russell's shoulders.
Riddick sounded off on the move Wednesday during his appearance on First Take.
“I don’t think there’s a single player who has more pressure on him in college football this year, to be quite honest with you,” Riddick boldly said.
It's understandable considering how scrutinized the QB position is in Tuscaloosa. Past Crimson Tide quarterbacks dealt with millions of watchful eyes; from Ty Simpson, to Tua Tagovailoa, all the way to even Joe Namath during the era of the legendary Paul “Bear' Bryant.
So Russell enters a room where all eyes even outside of the SEC will be on him. Except Riddick threw out one more obstacle the QB faces.
“Because think about it like this: Austin Mack had a relationship with Kalen DeBoer going back to Washington and then transfers to Alabama, so that was Kalen’s guy,” Riddick explained. “That was Ryan Grubb‘s guy. Now Keelon has taken the reins now and they’ve decided this is the guy who’s going to inject a lot of energy, playmaking ability, improvisation into this offense here for 2026. That’s a lot.”
Certainly Russell may have altered the relationship between Mack and his aforementioned coaches. But still, Russell has a struggling and questionable offense to ignite ahead of the 2026 season. Especially with Simpson gone.
