The West Midlands club did not want to make his move permanent, but the loan agreement with Liverpool stipulated that if he played a certain number of games, they would be obliged to buy him.
As a result, Elliott returned to Liverpool at the end of the season out of shape, with his development stunted as a result of the lack of football.

At Anfield, he faces the daunting prospect of displacing Florian Wirtz from the starting lineup, which is unlikely. Between the German’s ability and the £116m price tag, which obliges Liverpool to play him as much as they can, Elliott stands little chance of becoming a regular.
That’s before you even consider the detrimental effect last season’s loan at Villa Park had on him.
A loan or permanent move would give him the chance to kickstart a career that should never have been allowed to stall the way it has.
