Arsenal will discover their eight Champions League league-phase opponents on Thursday evening, and the confirmed pots leave open the possibility of a brutally difficult route through Europe.
Mikel Arteta’s side enter the competition in Pot 1 after reaching last season’s final, but their seeding offers little protection under the current format.
Arsenal must face two clubs from every pot, including two fellow European heavyweights from Pot 1.
And one possible combination stands out as particularly unpleasant.

UEFA has now officially confirmed all four pots for Thursday’s draw.
Taking home and away assignments into account, this could be close to Arsenal’s worst realistic outcome:

It is a legal combination under UEFA’s draw rules.
Arsenal cannot face Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa or Manchester United because clubs from the same association cannot meet during the league phase.
UEFA also prevents a club from being paired with more than two teams from another national association.
This nightmare scenario therefore gives Arsenal two Spanish opponents, two Italian clubs, two German sides and two French teams.
Real Madrid away would provide biggest Pot 1 challenge
Pot 1 is intimidating regardless of the outcome.
Arsenal could face PSG, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Barcelona or Atletico Madrid.
A trip to the Bernabeu would arguably represent the most difficult away assignment available, while PSG visiting the Emirates would provide an immediate reunion with the side who denied Arsenal the Champions League trophy last season.

There is one additional restriction involving Inter.
After Arsenal travelled to the San Siro in each of the previous two league phases, UEFA’s new draw conditions mean the Gunners cannot be sent away to Inter for a third consecutive campaign.
The possible Pot 1 away trips are still hardly inviting.

Dortmund and Napoli could make middle pots dangerous
The strength continues further down the seedings.
Borussia Dortmund headline a Pot 2 containing Roma, Sporting CP, Porto, Club Brugge, Real Betis and PSV as Arsenal’s possible opponents.
Drawing Dortmund away and Roma at the Emirates would give Arteta two demanding fixtures before even considering Pot 3.
Napoli sit in Pot 3 alongside Villarreal, RB Leipzig, Lille, Feyenoord, Fenerbahce, Shakhtar Donetsk, Galatasaray and Bodo/Glimt.
An away game in Naples would be among the hardest fixtures available from that section.
Villarreal at home could then complete a Spanish double alongside Real Madrid without breaching UEFA’s two-club association limit.
Pot 4 offers Arsenal no guarantee of an easy night
Even the lowest-ranked pot contains awkward possibilities.
Stuttgart and Lens stand out among a group also featuring Como, AEK Athens, LASK, Slovan Bratislava, Viking, Slavia Prague and Sabah.
Sending Arsenal to Stuttgart while Lens visit the Emirates would complete a league-phase schedule with almost no obvious breathing room.
There are much more favourable combinations available.
Club Brugge could also emerge from Pot 2, which would provide Christos Tzolis with the reunion he has already admitted he wants.
But Arsenal learned last season just how fine the margins can become at the end of a European campaign.
Their Champions League final defeat against PSG left Arteta’s side one shootout short of completing a historic double.
Thursday’s draw determines the first eight obstacles standing between them and another opportunity.
Arsenal will hope the computer produces something considerably kinder than this.
