Hello and welcome to football.london's coverage of the Champions League draw at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco! This evening, Arsenal will discover who they will play in the league phase of the competition as Mikel Arteta looks to finally get his hands on a piece of European silverware.
Last season, the Gunners enjoyed an excellent league phase campaign, finishing top of the table. Arsenal won all eight games and sealed automatic qualification to the knockout stages.
After a shaky start to the round of 16, when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bayer Leverkusen on the road, Arteta's side shifted back into gear at the Emirates Stadium and cruised into the quarter-finals.
Arsenal then secured a place in the semi-finals with a 1-0 aggregate win over Sporting CP, with Kai Havertz scoring the only goal of the tie in the dying embers of the first leg. The Gunners then broke sweat for the first time when they locked horns with Atletico Madrid.
Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw in the Spanish capital before grinding out a victory on home soil. The Gunners faced Paris Saint-Germain in the final at the Puskas Arena, 20 years on from the heartbreaking defeat to Barcelona at Stade de France.
Arteta's side fell at the final hurdle, courtesy of Gabriel Magalhaes, who blazed his penalty over the bar. This season, Arsenal will be determined to avenge their sorrows and finally lift the trophy at the Metropolitano in Madrid.
