Liverpool have identified Bournemouth’s Alex Scott as their “top target for defensive midfield”, according to reports.
The Independent claim that “multiple sources” have told them that Andoni Iraola’s former player is the Reds’ top priority to reinforce the middle of the park.
Fans are not convinced by the double pivot of Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, with both prone to vacating the midfield when they make forward runs.
However, Iraola does prefer box-to-box midfielders, rather than a traditional no.6, so that is why Scott is top of Richard Hughes’s list.
Scott is too expensive
Anyone hoping that an offer will be lodged for the 22-year-old before the transfer window closes will be left disappointed.
Scott has less than two years left on his contract, and he has recently rejected an extension, but The Independent believe that Bournemouth are still holding out for £90m.
After splashing out £120m (including add-ons) on Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, the transfer budget is rather depleted, and any remaining funds may be devoted to signing another winger anyway.

Liverpool will face fierce competition from other teams
In addition to the costs involved, another factor to consider is that the Merseysiders are one of several clubs actively pursuing Scott’s signature.
Arsenal made an enquiry for Scott earlier in the summer, but they subsequently signed Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle instead. Manchester City were among his suitors too, but as well as eyeing a move for EnzoFernandez, they have already snapped Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Chelsea are thought to be a much greater threat. The I Paper reported earlier this week that the Blues have had three separate offers between £62m and £68m rejected for the player. However, if Xabi Alonso’s side do sell Fernandez to City, they will likely have the funds required to meet Bournemouth’s demands.
