Chelsea reach£40m Honest Ahanor agreement with Atalanta

Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement with Atalanta to sign highly-rated defender Honest Ahanor in a package worth around £40million.

The Blues accelerated negotiations for the 18-year-old this week after already agreeing personal terms, and the two clubs have now reached an agreement over the transfer.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea have secured the deal for Ahanor, giving the move his trademark “here we go”.

Chelsea agree £40m Honest Ahanor deal

Chelsea are now preparing paperwork and arranging authorisation for Ahanor to travel as the remaining details are completed.

The package is expected to be worth around £40m.

It represents major progression from Wednesday, when ReadChelsea reported that Chelsea had agreed personal terms with Ahanor and advanced talks with Atalanta.

At that stage, there was still no agreement between the clubs.

That hurdle has now been cleared.

Chelsea must still decide the best immediate development pathway for Ahanor, with Romano reporting that a final decision on his next step will be made shortly.

Previous reporting suggested Chelsea were considering allowing the teenager to spend this season elsewhere before joining the first-team group permanently.

Atalanta relationship helps Chelsea complete deal

Chelsea’s relationship with Atalanta has already played a role in negotiations.

Marco Palestra moved to Stamford Bridge from the Serie A club earlier this summer and has quickly impressed Alonso.

ReadChelsea recently covered Alonso’s praise for Palestra and the qualities he has brought to Chelsea.

Ahanor represents another investment in a young Italian-based defender with significant development potential.

He can operate at centre-back or left-back and was already attracting Premier League interest before Chelsea accelerated their move.

Chelsea have simultaneously been reducing Alonso’s crowded defensive group, with Axel Disasi completing a loan move to Crystal Palace and Mamadou Sarr moving closer to joining Real Sociedad.

Ahanor is a different proposition.

Chelsea are investing around £40m in an 18-year-old they believe can become part of their long-term defensive structure.

The agreement with Atalanta is now in place.

Only the final paperwork, travel arrangements and decision over Ahanor’s immediate pathway remain before the transfer can be completed.
