Chelsea agree N72.9b deal to sign Nigeria-eligible teenage defender from Atalanta
Premier League club Chelsea have reportedly reached an agreement with Italian club Atalanta to secure the signing of young Nigeria-eligible defender Honest Ahanor before the close of the current summer window.
Ahanor, who joined the Italian club last summer, enjoyed an impressive campaign with Atalanta, showcasing his technical ability and strong defensive qualities throughout the season.
His performances have attracted the attention of Chelsea, with the Premier League club keen to secure his services as part of their continued investment in young talents.
According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement with Atalanta over the signing of the teenage defender.
The deal is reportedly worth a package of around £40 million (approximately N72.9 billion in Nigerian currency), with the final details still being sorted out.
Paperwork is reportedly being prepared, while authorization for the player to travel is also expected to be completed.
Following the agreement, Chelsea are expected to make a decision on the best pathway for Ahanor's development, with the club considering whether to keep him at Stamford Bridge or sanction a loan move to another club to provide him with regular playing opportunities.
Ahanor's impressive performances have also earned recognition at international level, with the teenager making his debut for the Italian national team during the 2025/2026 campaign.
However, the young defender remains eligible to represent Nigeria as he is yet to feature for Italy in a competitive international match.
With the transfer now reportedly close to completion, Ahanor will be keen to continue his development and justify Chelsea's decision to invest heavily in his potential as he prepares for the next stage of his career.
