Arsenal have made enquiries about Marseille winger Igor Paixao as they search for a replacement for Gabriel Martinelli, with Sunderland also pushing to sign him, as per latest transfer news.
Arsenal make enquiry for Igor Paixao
As reported by TEAMtalk, Arsenal have asked Marseille about Paixao as they look for options in attack**.** The reigning Premier League champions are preparing for Martinelli’s expected move to Al-Hilal, and have been looking for another winger throughout the summer.
Arsenal have already missed out on many targets, like Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Junior and Anthony Gordon. However, they did strengthen their attack by signing Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge**.** Igor Paixao has now emerged as another option**.** Paixao’s ability to play on either wing could make him a useful option for Arsenal. His pace and attacking movement would give the Gunners more variety in the final third, while his experience in European football could help him adapt quickly.
The Brazilian joined Marseille from Feyenoord last summer after also attracting interest from Leeds United. He had a strong first season in France. His form has now caught the eye of several clubs, but Marseille are not looking to sell at this stage.
Sunderland make two bids for Paixao
Premier League clubs other than Arsenal are also interested in the 26-year-old. Aston Villa have made enquiries, while Sunderland have taken their interest further by submitting two offers for Paixao. Both bids were rejected by Marseille.
Sunderland have reportedly agreed personal terms with the Brazilian. The Black Cats are still working on a deal for Sporting CP attacker Geny Catamo, but Paixao remains another option. His performances for Marseille have made him an important part of the team’s attack.
Sunderland will need to convince Marseille to change their stance if they want to sign Paixao. Arsenal could also join the race with a better offer. The Gunners may step up their interest if Martinelli completes his expected move to Saudi Arabia. For Paixao, the interest gives him more options, but there is no sign that he wants to leave Marseille.

Marseille determined to keep Paixao
Marseille remain confident that Paixao will stay at the Stade Velodrome despite the growing interest. The Brazilianis in no hurry to leave after enjoying an excellent first season with the Ligue 1 club. His performances have also made him a key player for head coach Bruno Genesio. The manager has reportedly made it clear to the club that Paixao is a key part of his plans. That has made it difficult for Sunderland to make progress despite their two rejected bids.
The situation could still change before the transfer window closes. Sunderland could return with a new and improved offer, while Arsenal may decide to make a formal proposal if they see Paixao as the right replacement for Martinelli. For now, Marseille remain determined to keep their Brazilian winger. Arsenal’s interest adds another layer to the situation, but Paixao appears set to remain at the French club unless a major offer changes their stance.
