The summer of change at Stamford Bridge, with the arrival of Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and the rebirth of Cole Palmer, gave the Blues the boost they needed to overcome Fulham in their opening game of the 2026/27 season. Chelsea were the better team for large parts and thoroughly deserved the three points.

After the opening day victory, former Chelsea captain John Terry gave honest opinion on the Enzo Fernandez situation:

“I see a couple of bits myself after the game, and he did wave to the supporters; he did kind of say thank you, and maybe he didn’t go over as much as the other players, but also, he’s in a really tough position.

“He got booed all night. I think it’s clear he wants away from the football club. So I’m sure, behind the scenes, both parties are trying to do what’s right. I think the most important thing for me last night, when I watched him come on the pitch, he still gives absolutely everything for our football club.”

“As long as he’s performing on the pitch, for me, and I’m sure I speak for every other Chelsea supporter here. As long as he gives absolutely everything until that point, whether he gets his move or not.

“And I’m sure if he doesn’t get his move, we’ll probably have to address it, because that’s maybe a different issue; whether he wants to then remain at the football club is a different subject. But whilst he puts on that Chelsea shirt and shows me what he showed me last night (vs Fulham), I’m happy because he’s still a top, top player,” added Terry.

The Last Word on Enzo Fernandez

The future of Enzo Fernandez has dominated the Chelsea-related headlines, despite the club making some eye-catching signings this summer.

There is no doubting the quality of the Argentine international. When he is on his A game, he dictates games, by constantly wanting the ball and knitting together attacks alongside his teammates. In recent seasons, he has also improved his goalscoring record, which has been a vital weapon for Chelsea.

Despite his qualities, his departure may not hurt Chelsea as much as some believe. Alonso looks to have a desire to play two holding players, with Moises Caicedo being one of the first names on the teamsheet when fit; the question is who will play alongside him.

I am not convinced shoehorning Enzo into that role would be best for him if he stays. I would rather see Reece James or Romeo Lavia in there to give the team more balance and protection in defence. Alex Scott is another player who could excel next to Caicedo. If Enzo stays, then it’s a great problem for Alonso to have, but if he wants to go, it’s best for all parties if a deal can be reached sooner rather than later.
