**Danny Welbeck scored on his Chelsea debut as Xabi Alonso’s side beat Luton Town 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to reach the Carabao Cup third round.**
Chelsea were made to work for the breakthrough after a goalless first half, but Welbeck headed home Malo Gusto’s cross five minutes after the restart.
Estevao then helped make the result safe late on when his effort was diverted into the net for an own goal, securing a home third-round tie against Leeds United.
Alonso made five changes from Monday’s Premier League victory at Fulham, with Welbeck, Mike Penders and Valentin Barco all handed their Chelsea debuts.
Penders started in goal behind Malo Gusto, Josh Acheampong, Maxence Lacroix and Pep Chavarria, while Reece James captained the side alongside Barco in midfield.
Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers retained their places in attack despite Sunday’s meeting with Brighton approaching.
The pre-match teamsheet also provided a major talking point when [Enzo Fernandez was left out of Chelsea’s squad entirely](https://readchelsea.com/2026/08/27/chelsea-xi-vs-luton-penders-debuts-as-enzo-misses-squad/).
Chelsea controlled the game but struggled to turn possession into clear chances during the opening period.
Rogers came closest when he struck the post, while Luton’s compact defensive shape repeatedly frustrated Alonso’s side.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 50th minute.
Gusto delivered from the right and Welbeck met the cross with a header to score his first Chelsea goal on his first appearance for the club.
It was exactly the impact Alonso would have wanted from the former Brighton striker after backing him to lead the attack.
Luton remained within one goal heading into the closing stages, but Chelsea eventually found the second.
Barco won possession in midfield before Palmer released Estevao.
The Brazilian beat his man and fired across goal, with the ball taking the decisive touch off a Luton defender and ending in the net for an own goal.
Chelsea could have added further goals in stoppage time.
Joao Pedro was denied from close range before Jamie Gittens struck the inside of the post, but 2-0 was enough to send Alonso’s side safely through.

Attention quickly returns to the Premier League, with Brighton travelling to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Alonso will have decisions to make after several fringe players were handed opportunities against Luton, but Welbeck’s debut goal provided the clearest positive from a professional cup victory.
