Mike Penders kept a clean sheet on his Chelsea debut just hours after the Blues agreed a £7.5million deal to sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa.
The timing could hardly have made Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation more intriguing.
Penders helped Xabi Alonso’s side beat Luton Town 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night, completing his first competitive appearance for the club without conceding.
Earlier in the evening, Chelsea had reached a verbal agreement to sign Martinez from Aston Villa for £7.5m.
Martinez is expected to arrive as immediate competition at senior level.
Penders has now provided Alonso with a timely reminder that Chelsea’s long-term goalkeeper may already be much closer than expected.

Mike Penders responds on Chelsea debut
Penders was one of three players handed full Chelsea debuts against Luton alongside Valentin Barco and Danny Welbeck.
Alonso selected the Belgian behind a back four of Malo Gusto, Josh Acheampong, Maxence Lacroix and Pep Chavarria.
Chelsea controlled the majority of the contest, with Luton largely forced into a defensive shape as the Blues searched for a breakthrough.
Penders was therefore not subjected to the kind of examination Robert Sanchez faced during Monday’s 3-2 victory at Fulham.
That distinction matters.
A clean sheet against League One opposition does not suddenly prove Penders should become Chelsea’s Premier League No.1.
But he completed what was required of him.
There were no obvious errors, no unnecessary drama and Chelsea progressed with their first clean sheet of the competitive season.
Danny Welbeck eventually opened the scoring after Malo Gusto’s cross before Estevao forced the own goal which completed the 2-0 victory.
Penders’ debut had become particularly significant even before kick-off.
ReadChelsea had already identified the goalkeeper as one of five players capable of pushing Alonso’s thinking against Luton.
Hours later, Chelsea’s goalkeeper landscape changed again.
Emi Martinez agreement changes the question
Chelsea’s interest in Martinez initially looked like an opportunistic possibility.
It no longer is.
The Blues have now agreed a £7.5m permanent transfer with Aston Villa after the Argentina international gave the move his approval.
Martinez brings a level of experience Penders cannot currently match.
He has played more than 250 matches for Aston Villa, won the World Cup with Argentina and operated regularly at Premier League and European level.
Reports also indicate Chelsea view Martinez as a short-term option while Penders remains an important part of their longer-term plans.
That makes the next decision particularly interesting.
Chelsea do not simply need to decide whether Martinez or Sanchez should start.
They need to decide what gives Penders the best route towards eventually taking the shirt himself.
Chelsea cannot waste Penders’ development
Chelsea spent around £17m on Penders because they believed he could become an elite goalkeeper.
He was not signed to permanently sit third in the hierarchy.
Martinez’s arrival potentially leaves Alonso with three credible senior options:
Martinez.
Sanchez.
Penders.
Keeping all three may look strong on paper, but goalkeeper development depends heavily on playing time.
Domestic cup appearances alone are unlikely to provide enough minutes for Penders if Martinez becomes Alonso’s first choice and Sanchez remains at Stamford Bridge.
Another loan could therefore become the logical solution.
But Thursday also demonstrated why Chelsea should be careful before removing Penders from Alonso’s immediate squad.
His confirmed start against Luton gave Alonso his first opportunity to evaluate the youngster in a competitive Chelsea match.
The next step should be based on development rather than simply squad numbers.
Martinez can help Chelsea without blocking Penders
There is a route where both decisions make sense.
At £7.5m, Martinez represents relatively little transfer risk for a goalkeeper of his pedigree.
Chelsea can gain immediate experience and increase competition after Sanchez’s difficult display at Fulham.
Penders does not need to beat Martinez to the No.1 shirt immediately.
At 21, his priority remains consistent high-level football and a clear route towards eventually starting for Chelsea.
The danger comes only if that pathway becomes unclear.
Thursday’s clean sheet does not settle the goalkeeper debate.
It does make Chelsea’s next decision more important.
Penders had been asked to provide evidence that he could handle a competitive Chelsea opportunity.
On his first night at Stamford Bridge, he did exactly what was required.
Now Chelsea must ensure the arrival of Martinez strengthens their goalkeeper department without losing sight of the player they believe can eventually lead it.
