Florian Wirtz has revealed that he recently made contact with Jurgen Klopp, as the Liverpool star looks set to play under the former Reds boss and new Germany head coach.

It comes as the 23-year-old is still looking to settle into life in the Premier League, following a difficult opening campaign at Anfield, with plenty of talk surrounding his transfer fee.

While there were moments of promise, it was difficult for the Germany star to pick up much momentum and recreate the performances of his Bayer Leverkusen days, which earned him such a high profile move.

The second time could be the charm for Wirtz, who has now had a year to process the challenges of the division to get himself playing at his full potential once again.

While Wirtz will want to make an impression under new boss Andoni Iraola, he also has another new manager to impress; Jurgen Klopp.

The former Liverpool manager recently announced his return to the touchline, following a break from coaching, as he took the German national team job.

In doing so, the 59-year-old will have some key decisions to make for the upcoming September and October international break, especially surrounding the players within his squad.

Wirtz is one of those he will have a decision to make on, with the playmaker recently revealing that he made first contact with Klopp in recent days.

Speaking to Sky Germany, he said: "We actually spoke on the phone for the first time two days ago. I had never had any contact with him before.

"I had heard that he had talked about me once or twice. People here at the club had told me about him, and that's why it was really cool that I got to meet him, talk to him, and I was definitely very happy about it.”

It could present an opportunity for Klopp to get the best out of Wirtz, providing a blueprint for how Liverpool can use him moving forward, following some difficulties so far.

While that is certainly the hope for the attacking midfielder, his opening display may have caused yet more concern. While many players struggled, there was more of the same difficulty for Wirtz against Newcastle, which has led to plenty of questions once again.

It's early days in the season, however, and every chance that last summer's marquee arrival could reach the heights once again, with this weekend's clash against Nottingham Forest coming as the earliest opportunity to do so.

It remains to be seen whether the head coach can unlock him and coach him further, but there is an opportunity for the Reds to benefit once again from the legendary manager.
