After months of negotiations, Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez [admitted Tuesday](https://www.bostonherald.com/2026/08/25/christian-gonzalez-frustrated-by-lack-of-contract-extension-with-patriots/) he’s frustrated by the lack of progress the team and his agent have made toward reaching an agreement on a contract extension.
Gonzalez is seeking a contract that will make him the highest-paid cornerback in the league, though according to [ESPN’s Adam Schefter](https://www.bostonherald.com/2026/08/27/espn-patriots-christian-gonzalez-havent-been-close-on-contract-extension/), the Patriots have yet to offer a deal that matches the record $33 million annually Seattle recently agreed to pay star corner Devon Witherspoon.
Asked Thursday for his reaction to Gonzalez’s comments, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said he had no reaction, but understood why it’s “probably” difficult for the 24-year-old cornerback.
“Our players are always free to feel how they want to feel,” Vrabel said. “And you just have to stay patient and hope that we can continue to work to some sort of agreement.”
On Tuesday, Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf claimed the team has offered to make Gonzalez the highest-paid corner in the league and highest-paid player in team history. However, it’s unclear how the Patriots’ offer is structured, and how much money in said offer is guaranteed.
Wolf’s claim, which confirmed a statement owner Robert Kraft made on July 24, runs contrary to Schefter’s fresh reporting Thursday.
“So, Witherspoon was going to get done first, and it got done at an average of $33 (million) a year. The Patriots have not been in that category,” Schefter said on The Pat McAfee Show. “But Witherspoon has established the benchmark, and the Patriots haven’t gone there, and they weren’t there before, and they don’t appear to be going there right now, and they’re off on the two sides of money.
“But the Patriots and Gonzalez haven’t been close. Now, I kind of think Mike Vrabel views defensive linemen and getting pressure as the most important thing on a defense. Like, he prioritizes that, loves corners, of course, and he knows that Christian Gonzalez is a great player, but if we’re going to pay players premiums up front, that’s something I think that’s been important to him in the past. I think they want to pay Christian Gonzalez, but they’re obviously not in the same neighborhood right now and haven’t been. Thus, his disappointment.”
Gonzalez returned to practice Monday after a two-week absence that appeared to be injury-related, something Vrabel claimed several times during Gonzalez’s time away from the field. But asked about his absence, Gonzalez declined to address specifics of his situation. The Pro Bowl corner deflected most questions during his Tuesday press conference, offering only that he was, indeed, frustrated by his situation, which has been the story of training camp.
“I mean, it’s frustrating, but I mean, I’m focused on the season,” Gonzalez said. “I’m focused on here now and doing what I got to do, and I’m out here to compete and get better.”
