Chelsea have reportedly agreed a fee of £7.5 million with Aston Villa for Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, with the Blues now moving closer to completing a surprise deal for the experienced shot-stopper.
The reported agreement would see Chelsea add one of the Premier League’s most established goalkeepers to their squad as the club continue to assess their options between the posts.
Martínez has been a key figure for Aston Villa since joining the Midlands club from Arsenal and has developed into one of the most recognisable goalkeepers in English football. The Argentina international has also enjoyed enormous success on the international stage, playing a major role in his country’s recent triumphs.
Now, however, reports suggest that his time at Villa Park could be coming to an end, with Chelsea having reached an agreement over a £7.5m transfer fee.
While a deal would still be subject to the remaining formalities, including personal terms and a medical, the agreement represents a significant development in Chelsea’s search for greater experience and competition within their goalkeeping department.
The Blues have invested heavily in their squad in recent seasons, with several younger goalkeepers given opportunities to establish themselves. However, Martínez would bring a very different profile to Stamford Bridge.
At 33, the Argentine possesses extensive Premier League experience and has played in some of football’s biggest matches. His leadership, personality and ability to perform under pressure could make him an attractive option for a CHELSEA side looking to add proven quality to an increasingly youthful squad.
Martínez has consistently demonstrated his value during his time at Aston Villa, becoming a major part of the club’s rise and helping them compete at the top end of the Premier League and in European competition.
For Villa, the reported £7.5m fee would mark the end of an important era should the transfer be completed. Martínez has been a hugely influential presence both on and off the pitch, and replacing a goalkeeper of his experience and quality would represent a significant challenge.
From CHELSEA’s perspective, the potential move could provide an immediate solution between the posts. Martínez’s ability as a shot-stopper, command of his penalty area and experience of high-pressure occasions would give the Blues another established option.
