Chelsea team news vs Brighton: Caicedo, Colwill and Quenda update

Chelsea could welcome several players back for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Brighton after Xabi Alonso delivered a positive update on Moises Caicedo, Levi Colwill and Geovany Quenda.

Caicedo is yet to feature competitively this season after suffering a setback in training, but Alonso hopes the midfielder will return to training ahead of facing his former club.

Colwill and Quenda are also preparing for Sunday’s game after both were left out of the squad for Chelsea’s 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Luton.

Moises Caicedo could return against Brighton

Caicedo has missed Chelsea’s opening three competitive matches after picking up an injury before the Premier League opener against Fulham.

ReadChelsea previously reported that Caicedo was targeting the Brighton game after being ruled out against Luton.

That possibility remains alive.

Speaking in Chelsea’s latest official team-news update, Alonso said he hoped Caicedo would train on Friday and could then be involved on Sunday.

“We are hopeful that he can be involved.”

However, Alonso stressed that Chelsea still need to assess the Ecuador international before making a final decision.

His return would be particularly timely after Chelsea used Reece James and Valentin Barco together in midfield against Luton.

Barco impressed on his competitive debut, with ReadChelsea analysing how the Argentine gave Alonso another midfield option.

Colwill and Quenda in contention

There is also positive news surrounding Colwill and Quenda.

Neither featured against Luton, but Alonso insists there are no new injury concerns around the pair.

Both are expected to train ahead of Brighton, although Chelsea continue to carefully manage Colwill following his previous injury problems.

Alonso explained that the defender must take the “right steps” rather than being pushed too quickly during a demanding three-game week.

Wesley Fofana is also available again after completing his two-match suspension.

That gives Alonso another defensive option as Chelsea look to follow Thursday’s 2-0 win over Luton with a third consecutive competitive victory.

Jordan Henderson remains further away from returning, with Alonso saying Chelsea are waiting for the midfielder to receive the green light following the injury he suffered during the World Cup.

Chelsea host Brighton at 2pm BST on Sunday, with ReadChelsea’s Chelsea vs Brighton TV and live-stream guide containing all the UK broadcast information.
