Emmanuel Petit has reportedly backed a potential Arsenal move for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, admitting that the Argentine could be the perfect signing for the Gunners as they attempt to negotiate a late deal.
Arsenal have continued to be linked with Alvarez as the transfer window enters its closing stages, with the north London club reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing the highly rated forward back to the Premier League.
Petit, who enjoyed a successful spell with Arsenal during his playing career, believes Alvarez possesses the qualities required to make a major impact at the Emirates Stadium.
The former France international has watched Mikel Arteta transform Arsenal into one of the strongest sides in English football, with the Gunners consistently competing at the top end of the Premier League. However, the search for an additional attacking option has remained a major talking point, particularly as Arsenal look to add another level of quality to their forward line
‘He’s a beautiful player with great movement and intelligence. He’s got speed, technique, and vision,’ Petit told Oddschecker of the wantaway Atleti striker, formerly of Manchester City.
‘He can score many goals and provide assists. I love his movement.
‘It’s hard sometimes to get intelligent players who understand the DNA of the team. ARSENAL have a proper DNA on the pitch, and when they buy top players, they have to fit into the system.
‘I think Alvarez would be perfect for Arsenal. The way he plays, the way he moves, the way he links up play, and he’s clinical when he gets to the edge of the box.’
Atletico Madrid would be under no obligation to sell one of their most valuable players, and reports suggest that a significant offer would be required to convince the Spanish side to consider his departure. Negotiations could also be complicated by the limited time remaining in the transfer window.
Still, Arsenal may be encouraged by suggestions that Atletico could be open to a sale under the right circumstances. Barcelona have reportedly been ruled out as a potential destination, potentially leaving other European clubs with an opportunity to explore a deal.
For Petit, though, the argument is straightforward. If ARSENAL can find a way to secure Alvarez’s signature, the former midfielder believes they could be landing the perfect addition to Arteta’s squad.
