Jurrien Timber names the best finisher he’s ever played with and it’s a shock

Arsenal - Jurrien Timber

Team-mates who spend months watching each other in training often have the clearest view of who is most clinical. Awards-season interviews produce light answers that still carry weight inside the dressing room. Players recovering from long-term injury have extra time to observe those around them.

Attackers who can score from range and in derbies tend to stand out. Versatile forwards who filled more than one role last season remain important as the squad takes shape. Simple compliments from respected colleagues travel quickly among supporters.

Jurrien Timber has named Eberechi Eze as the best finisher he has ever played with. The Dutch defender was asked the question at the PFA Awards and did not choose Viktor Gyokeres or Bukayo Saka.

“That is not an easy one. There are so many. I’m going to go with Eberechi Eze,” Timber said.

Eze scored 10 goals in his debut season at Arsenal, including five against Tottenham across two north London derbies. He also found the net against Newcastle, Crystal Palace and with a long-range strike against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

The England international made more than 50 appearances last season, the majority as an attacking midfielder. With Leandro Trossard having left and Gabriel Martinelli’s future uncertain, Eze could also be used on the left wing alongside Christos Tzolis.

Timber is still working his way back to full fitness after a long absence and has not featured this season. His comments came while discussing former and current team-mates in a wider interview.

Supporters will enjoy the endorsement. Eze’s finishing from various positions has already produced memorable moments, and Timber’s view from inside the squad adds extra weight. The attacker remains a key part of Mikel Arteta’s options as Arsenal begin their title defence.

Further opportunities for Eze will come as the Premier League and Champions League programmes get under way. Timber’s own return is expected to follow in the coming weeks if his rehabilitation continues as planned.
