Ah the curious case of Tyler Dibling. The age-old argument for many an Everton supporter.
Dibling got his first start in an Everton shirt since January, in the 0-4 win at Preston with a big chance to impress and to kick-start his somewhat underwhelming Everton career.
Dibling did have a very good pre-season and 100% deserved to be part of the first league game against Palace but was not called upon. Let’s delve into Dibling’s game vs Championship team Preston.
Tyler Dibling's Everton situation
Personally, I like Tyler Dibling, and I really do think there is a player in there. Preston was one of the better teams he could play against, and I think he was fine, more than fine. The one thing that is good about Tyler is that he actively wants to take players on, he drives forward with the ball with purpose and has shown that in the past for the Blues and for Southampton too.
Let’s not forget, he was ripping the Premier League with Southampton, who were horrendous that year. On more than one occasion, he glided past the full-backs with ease and drove to the line to get the ball across.
I do have slight criticisms, however. He does seem slightly lightweight in the one-on-one situation as he was shoved off the ball like a little boy by Preston centre-half Storey, the criticism of that is apparent but 10 seconds before that he had just glided past 3 Preston players like they weren’t there.
When he was roaming round the Preston penalty area, he seemed a lot more dangerous, a twist and turn and a shot on the edge of the box was only stopped by a good save down to the near post by the Preston Keeper. The signs of a good player are there.
The biggest go to theory is that Dibling seems to be ‘not bothered’ and ‘moody’ on the pitch. Is that a bad thing? Does he really matter what he looks like, what faces he pulls if he is doing the business? Everton fans have the worst trait of writing off players within minutes, Romelu Lukaku is Everton’s greatest ever Premier League goalscorer and he was written off as ‘he doesn’t run’
Tyler Dibling needs the Harrison Armstrong treatment by David Moyes. Armstrong has been helped massively with a loan and the constant bigging up by Moyes, Dibling has had neither. Let’s not forget, the lad is 20 years old, he needs the support of the manager and the fans alike.
My thoughts are that you can’t be ‘not a good player’ if a Premier League team has paid £40m for you, which David Moyes has clearly signed off on. Give the lad some support and have a little patience with him. He will 100% be a player for years to come.
