Mike Vrabel Reveals Harsh Reality Behind Patriots' Decision to Trade Key Target 1
New England Patriots traded their fourth-year rookie Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans in exchange of Jayleen Reed and a 2028 seventh round draft pick. The Patriots’ wide receiver role has some depth according to Mike Vrabel and despite having respect for him, he had opened up about why he had to let Kayshon Boutte go. According to the HC, it was a logical one for Boutte.
Mike Vrabel Explained Why Kayshon Boutte Had to Go
Boutte, a 24-year-old former LSU standout selected by New England in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, had developed into a reliable contributor. In 2025 he set career highs with 33 catches, 551 yards, and 6 touchdowns in 14 games (10 starts), averaging a strong 16.7 yards per reception.

The move became inevitable after the Patriots significantly upgraded their receiver room in the offseason. They acquired three-time All-Pro A.J. Brown via trade from the Philadelphia Eagles and signed Romeo Doubs in free agency. That left a crowded group that also included DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, rookie candidate Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the trade publicly for the first time after New England’s preseason finale, a 37-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night. He was characteristically direct about the roster math that made Boutte expendable.
“That was one place (wide receiver) where we do have some depth, and I think for all parties involved, that was probably the best thing. Without injuries, Kayshon probably would have been inactive. Unfortunately, it’s kind of the way it was. It’s just with him not playing special teams.” Vrabel said.
Vrabel also spoke warmly about Boutte’s character and personal growth. “I tried to thank Kayshon as many times as I could. I texted him again today. It’s just his maturity, his growth, his ability to put into words last year and share his own personal struggle, but also the growth that he made from that. That’s positively going to affect a lot of people,” he said.
In Houston he is expected to compete for a backup role behind Nico Collins, Xavier Hutchinson, and Jaylin Noel.
Role Kayshon Boutte Would Have At Texans
Boutte joins the Texans primarily as a potential No. 2 wide receiver opposite star Nico Collins, filling the void created by Jayden Higgins’ season-ending ACL tear. Most projections place him as the primary outside counterpart to Collins. He is a proven deep threat and contested-catch specialist who excelled stretching the field in New England with 16.7 yards per reception in 2025, among the NFL’s best.
With Higgins out and Tank Dell still ramping up from a major 2024 multi-ligament knee injury, Boutte has a clear path to significant snaps in three-receiver sets. He is expected to compete with Xavier Hutchinson for outside snaps, while Jaylin Noel primarily works the slot.
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans indicated the team will take a measured approach. Boutte will ramp up through strength and conditioning work and preliminary testing rather than being forced into heavy snaps immediately. He participated only in individual drills during early practices with the team and was not expected to play in the final preseason game.
