The Seattle Seahawks’ preseason has mercifully come to an end.
Seattle slogged through a backup-filled 9-9 tie with the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.
There was some good for the defending champs, with a more poised Jalen Milroe at quarterback and a defense that held the Chiefs out of the endzone. But the Seahawks (0-2-1) head into the regular season with a new question at kicker, after Jason Myers missed an extra point and a 52-yard field goal as time expired.
Here are three takeaways.
Milroe shows signs of growth
Milroe, the Seahawks’ third-round pick in 2025, made his first start of the preseason and handled all the reps at quarterback. Milroe got Seattle on the board first with a field-goal drive from his own 8, where Milroe stood strong in the pocket and hit Cody White for a 40-yard pass out of his own endzone.
That was the start of a sharper day for Milroe, coming off a poor performance against the Titans, where he passed for 52 yards, was sacked twice and threw two interceptions.
On Friday Milroe completed 16 of 23 attempts for 223 yards and a touchdown – a 4-yard score to tight end Nick Vannett. He added seven carries for 20 yards.
Milroe will firmly be the Seahawks’ No. 3 QB at the start of the regular season. He handled some opportunities as a rookie, coming in for designed runs, which were largely unsuccessful.
What’s wrong with Myers?
The Seahawks couldn’t be more confident in their kicker coming off a year where Myers set the NFL’s single-season points record (206) and booted five field goals in the Super Bowl.
Seattle may feel a little less sure after Myers continued to disappoint this preseason. Myers, 35, has now missed in each of the Seahawks preseason games.
Seattle would have won Friday had Myers not missed an extra point and a 52-yard attempt at the end of regulation. Myers also missed an extra point and a 44-yard attempt in a 19-16 loss to the Titans and was unsuccessful on a 45-yard try in a loss to the Cowboys.
Myers is in the last year of a 4-year, $21 million contract this season, the fifth-highest of any kicker in the league.
Time for the real deal
The Seahawks didn’t bother playing their starters this preseason and should be well rested (possibly rusted) when the regular season kicks off on Sept. 9.
Seattle will cut its roster down to 53 by the deadline on Sunday at 3 p.m. Then focus will shift to a rematch of Super Bowl 60 against the New England Patriots that will officially open the NFL season.
The Seahawks remain on of the top contenders to repeat as champion. They have the fourth-highest odds to win the Super Bowl (+1100) behind the Los Angeles Rams (+550), Baltimore Raves (+1000) and Buffalo Bills (+1000).
