Robert Sanchez could be frozen out at Chelsea if he remains beyond the transfer deadline afterXabi Alonso sanctioned the move for Emiliano Martinez.
Chelsea had entered the season expecting Sanchez to remain their first-choice goalkeeper, with Mike Penders providing competition and representing a longer-term option.
That position has changed rapidly.
According to The Guardian, Sanchez’s error-strewn display against Fulham helped convince Chelsea that another senior goalkeeper was required.
Martinez subsequently emerged as an unexpected opportunity, with Alonso approving the move.

The Guardian reports Chelsea now believe Sanchez needs to leave before the transfer window closes.
If no move materialises, the Spaniard is expected to be frozen out of Alonso’s plans and is unlikely to start against former club Brighton on Sunday.
Interest has reportedly emerged from England, elsewhere in Europe and Saudi Arabia.
It represents a dramatic change in status for a goalkeeper who began the campaign as Chelsea’s established No.1.
Alonso has already demonstrated a willingness to make difficult early calls, with his handling of injuries and squad availability becoming a major part of Chelsea’s opening weeks. ReadChelsea previously looked at Austin MacPhee’s role alongside Alonso as Chelsea dealt with Moises Caicedo’s injury before Luton.
The goalkeeper situation is an even more significant decision.
Alonso approves Emiliano Martinez move
Chelsea’s pursuit of Martinez was not simply imposed on the head coach.
The Guardian reports the Argentina international’s representatives approached Chelsea before the opportunity was presented to Alonso by the club’s sporting leadership.
Alonso gave his approval.
Chelsea then accelerated negotiations with Aston Villa for the World Cup winner, who provides the proven senior presence Alonso seemingly felt was missing.
The decision carries additional significance because of Martinez’s age.
At 34 next week, he does not fit the young-player recruitment model that has defined much of BlueCo’s ownership.
Chelsea appear prepared to make that exception because they want immediate reliability.
Mike Penders remains Chelsea’s future
Martinez’s arrival does not necessarily alter Chelsea’s long-term belief in Penders.
The Belgian kept a clean sheet against Luton on his competitive debut and remains highly regarded inside Stamford Bridge.
Instead, Chelsea can allow Penders to develop alongside an experienced goalkeeper who has won football’s biggest international prize.
That leaves Sanchez as the player most obviously displaced.
Rather than entering another campaign with uncertainty around their goalkeeper position, Alonso appears to have demanded a clearer hierarchy.

Sanchez’s Chelsea career has repeatedly contained both impressive performances and damaging individual mistakes.
The Fulham display appears to have been one mistake too many.
Chelsea could have continued with their original goalkeeper plan and hoped Sanchez rediscovered consistency.
Instead, Alonso supported an immediate intervention.
Martinez will still have to prove the £7.5m gamble was justified, while Penders’ development remains an important part of Chelsea’s future.
But Sanchez now faces the clearest consequence of the overhaul.
Unless a transfer is secured before the deadline, his route back into Alonso’s Chelsea side looks increasingly difficult.
