Nicolas Jackson has completed his permanent transfer from Chelsea to Aston Villa, bringing an end to the Senegal international’s two-year spell at Stamford Bridge.
The 25-year-old joins Villa in a deal worth up to £65 million, with reports indicating that the package consists of an initial £47.5m fee plus a further £17.5m in potential add-ons. The transfer represents a club-record investment for Villa as Unai Emery moves quickly to reshape his attacking options.
Jackson originally joined Chelsea from Villarreal in 2023 and departs having scored 30 goals in 81 appearances across all competitions. During his time in west London, he played a role in Chelsea’s Conference League and Club World Cup successes.
His final season at Chelsea saw him spend time away from the first-team plans before moving on loan to Bayern Munich, where he reportedly scored 11 goals and helped the German giants win the Bundesliga and German Cup.
The move to Villa represents something of a reunion for Jackson and Emery. The pair previously worked together at Villarreal, and Emery is understood to have been keen to bring the forward to Villa Park as a replacement for Ollie Watkins, who is moving to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.
For Jackson, the transfer provides an opportunity to establish himself as the focal point of a Premier League attack. Villa will be hoping his pace, physicality and ability to stretch defences can help fill the sizeable void left by Watkins.
Opinion: £65m is a good deal for Chelsea
From Chelsea’s perspective, this is a deal that makes considerable sense.
The Blues paid around £32m to sign Jackson from Villarreal, meaning a potential £65m return represents a significant financial gain on a player who was no longer central to the first-team plans.
More importantly, CHELSEA have avoided keeping an expensive asset who appeared unlikely to feature regularly under Xabi Alonso. Jackson’s time at Stamford Bridge showed flashes of quality, but his consistency in front of goal and decision-making remained points of debate.
Getting a fee potentially worth more than double the original investment allows Chelsea to redirect funds towards players who better fit Alonso’s tactical vision.
There is always a risk that Jackson flourishes elsewhere, particularly given Emery’s previous relationship with him. However, Chelsea have maximised the value of a player they were prepared to move on from.
