Drew Allar got ample playing time during the preseason. The Pittsburgh Steelers gave him nearly the entire second half against Green Bay, then the entire second half against New York and Buffalo.
While some argue preseason football isn’t real football, it was the best chance the Steelers will have to evaluate him.
The returns were impressive. Allar wasn’t lighting the stat sheet on fire, but he did well to take care of the ball and extend plays when necessary. Analyst Trevor Sikkema was very impressed and thinks Allar made a good argument for himself in the future.
“It’s great that Allar’s already showing them a thing or two here. Because we know Rodgers is going to get all the snaps for that team this year. I even think that, just from the preseason of what we’ve seen from Allar already, you kind of go into next season thinking, ‘Alright, is he the incumbent guy who we’re going to slot in there at QB1 if we can’t find a home-run option maybe in the draft.’ I think they could be pretty happy with Drew Allar and what he could potentially be in Mike McCarthy’s offense,” Sikkema said Friday on The Rich Eisen Show.
With this being Aaron Rodgers’ self-proclaimed last year in the NFL, the Steelers will have a decision to make. However, it’s far too early to know what that decision might look like.
If the Steelers have a good year, they might pick too low to take a quarterback in the 2027 draft. If they finish toward the bottom of the league, a quarterback becomes much more of a possibility. It’s impossible to tell how next year’s crop of quarterbacks is going to look at this moment.
But Allar will remain an option, either way. No matter what decisions the Steelers make at quarterback this weekend, Allar is going to be on the roster. His path toward a starting role is there. He was taken in the third round, early enough to show that the Steelers had significant interest in him. He’s got a year to sit and watch one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. And he’ll be working with a head coach whose quarterback resume is nearly unbeatable.
That said, it’s still far too early to make any real conclusions about Drew Allar. He did what the Steelers wanted him to in the preseason. But it is just that, the preseason. And we’re still a long way from any situation where Allar takes regular-season reps.
However, he did prove himself a bit. And the Steelers are no stranger to a barren quarterback landscape at the beginning of the offseason. If they don’t have many options after the year ends, Sikkema is right that Drew Allar played well enough to at least be considered for the starting role in 2027.
