On this day in 2004, Newcastle United made a significant managerial change. Despite his reluctance to be remembered as ‘the man who shot Bambi’, chairman Freddy Shepherd decided to part ways with manager Sir Bobby Robson. The decision came after the Magpies failed to secure a victory in any of their first four Premier League matches of the new season. Robson, a respected figure in football, had been at the helm of Newcastle since 1999, leading the club to several successful campaigns, including a third-place finish in the 2002-2003 season. However, the lacklustre start to the 2004-2005 season prompted the club to seek a new direction.

Exactly one year later, on 30th August 2005, Newcastle United made headlines again, this time with a high-profile signing. The club confirmed the acquisition of Michael Owen from Real Madrid for a then club record transfer fee of £16.8 million. Owen’s stint in Spain had not been as fruitful as anticipated, with the striker making 36 La Liga appearances, many as a substitute, and scoring 13 goals. Despite his desire to return to Liverpool, the club where he began his professional career, Liverpool were unwilling to meet the transfer fee demanded by Real Madrid. Consequently, Owen opted to join Newcastle United, where he would spend four years, although his time at the club was marred by injuries.
The date of Owen’s signing held additional significance, as it marked seven years since a memorable performance by the striker against Newcastle. On 30th August 1998, a teenage Michael Owen showcased his prodigious talent by scoring a 15-minute hat-trick for Liverpool in their 4-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park. This performance was one of many that established Owen as one of the most promising young talents in English football at the time.
