Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Gibraltar international winger James Scanlon, with the 19-year-old becoming the latest young talent to join the club as part of their continued investment in the future.
Scanlon arrives in north London from Manchester United after spending the second half of last season on loan at League Two side Swindon Town. The move gives Arsenal another promising attacking option within their development setup and provides Scanlon with the opportunity to continue his progression at a club renowned for nurturing young players.
Despite his relatively young age, Scanlon already possesses considerable senior experience. The winger has earned 24 caps for Gibraltar, giving him valuable exposure to international football and allowing him to regularly test himself against experienced players.
His time with Swindon also provided an important introduction to senior club football. Playing in League Two offered Scanlon the opportunity to experience the physical demands of the professional game and gain regular first-team minutes after spending much of his development within Manchester United’s academy
“It’s a pleasure to be here, I can’t wait to get started,” James said after signing his contract, “I’ve been waiting to get this over the line, so I’m buzzing to be here.
“My family are massive to me, so to have them here for this special day is only going to make it better.”
Scanlon’s immediate focus will be on settling into his new surroundings and making an impression with ARSENAL‘s development group. Reports indicate that there are no immediate plans for another loan, meaning he is expected to continue his development in north London while attempting to put himself on Mikel Arteta’s radar.
For Arsenal, the signing represents a relatively low-risk opportunity to add a player who already has senior international and professional experience.
For Scanlon, meanwhile, the challenge is to turn that experience into consistent performances in an ARSENAL shirt.
The teenager has already taken an unusual path for a player his age, and his move to the Emirates provides another opportunity to prove that he can take the next step
