After a decent opening day win against Fulham, a game made considerably more entertaining than it needed to be by Robert Sanchez’s ongoing commitment to chaos, Chelsea return to Stamford Bridge for the first home game of the 2026/27 season.
Standing in our way are Brighton. Again.
If there is one fixture guaranteed to make Chelsea fans sigh before a ball is kicked, it’s Brighton. The Seagulls completed the double over us last season and have won each of the last four meetings in all competitions. In fact, we’ve lost five of the last eight against them. Worse still, Brighton have scored exactly three goals in each of our last three meetings, which is the sort of consistency we’d quite like them to stop displaying.
The good news is that against Fulham we saw plenty of attacking promise. The bad news is that we also defended with all the confidence of a group project where nobody has read the instructions. Admittedly, having Sanchez behind you can create a certain sense of urgency, panic and existential dread. With Martinez unavailable, Penders looks set to come in, and Chelsea fans everywhere will be hoping his first contribution in the Premier League is introducing himself rather than collecting the ball from his own net.
Brighton arrive flying. They opened their league campaign by dismantling Aston Villa 4-0 before following it up with another 4-0 win over Tromso in the Conference League. Yes, that Conference League. The one we won with that former manager who, seems to be unable to remember our name. Brighton will therefore arrive full of confidence, momentum and probably several spreadsheets detailing exactly how to exploit our weaknesses.
One piece of comforting news: Danny Welbeck, the highest goalscorer in Chelsea vs Brighton fixtures, won’t be playing for the visitors today. Unfortunately, Brighton have spent the last few years proving they don’t necessarily need him to score against us.

**19′** – Palmer does something ridiculous that would be replayed all week if it ended in a goal.
**27′** – Brighton complete 37 passes in a row. Chelsea fans begin having flashbacks.
**34′** – GOAL CHELSEA! Stamford Bridge erupts. Social media immediately starts discussing a title challenge.
**45+2′** – Sanchez somehow gets mentioned despite not playing.
**Half-time verdict:** Chelsea have been the better side, but anyone thinking this game is over clearly hasn’t watched Chelsea versus Brighton over the last few years. The next 45 minutes are likely to last approximately three days.
**54′** – Brighton equalise after a sequence of events best described as “avoidable.”
**67′** – Penders makes a save that earns immediate cult hero status.
**73′** – Brighton hit the woodwork. The Bridge remembers what anxiety feels like.
**81′** – Chelsea score a wonderful team goal. VAR checks everything except the weather before disallowing it.
**89′** – Brighton launch one last attack. Every Chelsea supporter suddenly develops a heart condition.
**90+6′** – Full-time. But will the Brighton curse be ended?
**MANAGER’S VIEWS**
Going into today’s game, Chelsea manager, Xabi Alonso, says _“I am happy to have the welcome from the fans. I have felt it since the first day that they were happy that we were starting this new time together. Now it’s time to deliver, now it’s time to show it every weekend. It’s only two games. A good start, but it’s still early days. And on Sunday \[Brighton\] are a good team, a good test to see where we are.”_
Brighton manager, Fabian Hurzeler, meanwhile, says _“Here in this club, you play a big part, so therefore I really want to emphasise this togetherness. Second of all, I’m really happy for the supporters, for the fans. They had a great and very energetic atmosphere on Thursday, so they get what they deserve for their support through the whole season. Now the focus has to go to Chelsea. We play a very important game, another big challenge, another big opportunity for us, so we have to be ready for that.”_
**SQUAD NEWS**
For Chelsea, Marco Palestra and Jordan Henderson remain out. Wesley Fofana is available again after suspension and Moises Caicedo could also return from injury. Enzo Fernandez will be otherwise engaged on Tinder with that former manager who’s name escapes me.
For Brighton, Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, Stefanos Tzimas and Evan Ferguson remain long-term absentees, whilst Jack Hinshelwood and Georginio Rutter are doubts.
