Munoz Rescues Point But Issues Persist For Iraola

Andoni Iraola’s first home game at Anfield ended in a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest.
The result left Liverpool with two points from their two opening matches.
Munoz Shines on Full Home Debut
New signing Víctor Munoz produced a strong performance on his full home debut.
The 23-year-old was willing to take risks with his decisions on the ball, something Liverpool badly needed against Forest.
In the 82nd minute the winger fired the ball into the far corner to make it 2-2, scoring his first Premier League goal for the Reds.
Additionally, Munoz’s best position is on the right wing because he gives the team an easy pass out wide on the right.
Possession High, Chances Low, Defence Exposed
Iraola’s side controlled the game with 69 percent possession. However, Forest created five big chances compared to Liverpool’s one.
That is a major concern and it came down to mediocre defending from the Reds.
Dan Ndoye’s goal was a perfect example of how the visitors exposed Liverpool’s defence, as they failed to deal with a long ball from Matz Sels.
Quick restarts also caused similar problems. One clear example came when Liam Delap played a quick throw into Neco Williams, who was then brought down by Alisson Becker.
For a side playing a high defensive line, Liverpool need to offer better protection behind the attack to prevent one direct pass from turning into a dangerous chance.
Furthermore, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong struggled when Forest repeatedly tested them in high-volume duels.
Both were eventually substituted, underlining how uncomfortable the game became for the full-backs.
Midfield Still Lacks Real Protection
A double pivot of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai was different from the one used against Newcastle.
Yet Liverpool still lacked the physical protection needed in front of their centre-backs.
The midfield could not stop the opponents from creating chances from defensive situations.
Iraola’s system requires a solid defensive midfielder capable of winning second balls and killing counter-attacks.
Character Shown But Slow Title Start
Liverpool’s mentality is admirable, as the team has come from behind twice in their two league matches.
Nevertheless, for a team expected to compete for the title, two points from two games is a slow start.
The next fixture against Ipswich Town will reveal whether Iraola addresses those weaknesses.
