Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached an agreement in principle to sign Iliman Ndiaye from Everton, potentially leaving David Moyes with a major attacking hole to fill before Tuesday’s deadline.
David Ornstein reports that Spurs have moved for Ndiaye after also considering Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo.
Gakpo has opted for Man City instead, with City now in talks with Liverpool over a deal for the Netherlands international.
City had also shown interest in Ndiaye, but their move for Gakpo appears to have taken them in a different direction.
For Everton, the immediate concern is Ndiaye.
The Senegal international has become one of Moyes’ most important attacking players and started yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.
Moyes made his position on late departures clear afterwards.
“I don’t think we can afford to lose any players, certainly not our better ones,” he said.
What could this mean for Grealish?
The Ndiaye development comes on the same morning that Everton’s attempt to bring Jack Grealish back to the Hill Dickinson appears to have moved forward.
The Bobble reports that Everton are advancing in talks with Man City for Grealish, who spent last season on loan with the Blues.
There is currently no indication that the two deals are directly linked.
Everton’s interest in Grealish has been running throughout the summer and existed before the latest developments surrounding Ndiaye.
But losing Ndiaye would clearly change the complexion of Everton’s final two days of the window.
Grealish would replace some of the creativity and personality lost from the attack, although he and Ndiaye are different players and Everton would still be losing a forward who has become central to Moyes’ side.
It would also put Moyes’ comments at Bournemouth into sharper focus. The manager wants to strengthen his squad and has made clear that he does not want his better players leaving.
Much now rests on whether the reported agreement with Tottenham develops into a completed deal.
If Ndiaye does leave, bringing Grealish back would look less like an extra piece of business and more like an important part of Everton’s response.
