Clubs that strengthen the under-18s in August are thinking about the next two seasons as much as this one. Scholarship terms that turn into professional contracts on a 17th birthday follow a familiar pathway. Young wingers with senior cup minutes arrive further along than most of their age group.
Wales youth internationals who have already sat on a Championship bench offer a different profile. Gaps on one flank at academy level are often filled by a single well-chosen arrival. Supporters who follow the youth sides note every confirmed addition.

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Axel Donczew from Cardiff City. The 16-year-old left winger joins on scholarship terms and will sign a professional contract when he turns 17 in February.
Donczew is a Wales Under-19 international. He made two senior appearances for Cardiff in the EFL Trophy last season and was named on the bench against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.
Arsenal needed attacking reinforcements at under-18 level and hope the teenager will make an immediate impact in that age group. He will continue his development in north London after leaving the Cardiff academy.

The move adds another wide option to a youth setup that has already seen several arrivals and departures this summer. Scholarship deals of this kind are designed to secure the player until he can sign professionally in the new year.
Supporters will welcome another young attacker into the system. First-team opportunities remain a longer-term aim, but senior experience at Cardiff will help him settle. Further updates on his integration with the under-18s are expected once the new season’s academy fixtures begin.
Arsenal continue to recruit at every level as they look to keep the pathway well stocked. Donczew now begins the next stage of his career as a Gunner.
