Chelsea moves sign‘one of best in world’as replacement for departing£120M star

Chelsea have reportedly stepped up their efforts to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara as Xabi Alonso looks to prepare for the potential departure of Enzo Fernandez.

According to Foot Mercato, Alonso has identified Camara as a priority target as Chelsea seek an immediate replacement for Fernandez, whose future at Stamford Bridge has become increasingly uncertain amid strong interest from Manchester City. The Blues are understood to have already made enquiries about the Senegal international, with discussions now taking place over the feasibility of a potential transfer.

Fernandez’s situation has intensified in recent days, with the Argentina international left out of Chelsea’s squad for their Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town. Alonso subsequently suggested that he wanted players who had the desire to represent Chelsea, further increasing speculation that Fernandez could leave before the transfer window closes.

Chelsea are therefore moving quickly to identify a suitable successor, and Camara has emerged as their leading candidate. The 22-year-old has established himself as an important player for Monaco since joining the Ligue 1 club from Metz in 2024 and has continued to attract attention with his performances in domestic and European competition.

Camara is capable of operating as either a defensive or box-to-box midfielder, offering the energy, ball progression and defensive work that could make him an attractive option for Alonso’s midfield. His versatility could also allow the Chelsea boss to use him in different tactical roles depending on the opposition.

Reports suggest CHELSEA and Monaco have already begun discussions, although there remains work to do before a deal can be completed. Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro recently indicated that no official offer had been received and suggested Camara would be expected to remain at the club unless an exceptional proposal arrived.

The midfielder is also attracting interest from elsewhere, with Liverpool among the clubs reportedly monitoring his situation. However, Chelsea are currently believed to be one of the most proactive sides in the race, particularly given the possibility of Fernandez’s departure.

Opinion

Camara would represent an intriguing signing for Chelsea if Fernandez does leave. Replacing a midfielder of Fernandez’s quality is never going to be straightforward, but the Monaco star offers a younger, energetic alternative who could develop significantly under Alonso.

Rather than attempting to find an exact replacement, CHELSEA could use the opportunity to reshape their midfield around Camara’s strengths. His defensive discipline, mobility and ability to contribute going forward could complement the players already at Stamford Bridge.
