Next month Liverpool and Everton will do something they haven’t done since January 1981. With thousands of fans descending every matchday on Anfield and Goodison Park, past logistical challenges have ruled out the possibility of the two teams playing at home at the same time for decades.
However, with the Blues' move across the city to their new waterfront home at Hill Dickinson Stadium, next month will see both clubs playing important fixtures on the same night for the first time in 45 years. In the next round of the Carabao Cup, Everton have been drawn against Wolverhampton Wanderers after their win at Preston North End on Wednesday.
The Blues will kick off at Hill Dickinson Stadium at 7.45pm on Wednesday September 9.
Fifteen minutes later, Liverpool are scheduled to kick off at Anfield in their Champions League group stage tie against Atletico Madrid.

Barring a late rescheduling of one of the fixtures, it will be the first time the city rivals will play at their respective home grounds simultaneously since January 3 1981 when Liverpool played Altrincham and Everton played Arsenal at home in the FA Cup third round.

On that day, Liverpool drew a bigger crowd for their game against non-League opponents Altrincham than Everton did for their clash against fellow Division One side Arsenal, who had reached the final of the competition for the previous three seasons.

Everton opened the scoring on 85 minutes with an own goal from Kenny Sansom – who would go on to make seven appearances for the Blues towards the end of his career over a decade later – while Mick Lyons sealed Gordon Lee’s men’s passage.
The ECHO went with the headline ‘The Young Stargazers – Everton kids set shining example.’
