Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is now two years into his latest coaching position at the University of North Carolina. The Tar Heels won their season opener last night in Dublin, Ireland, against Texas Christian University, 15-10. The win gives Belichick his first-ever season-opening win as UNC’s head coach.
In last night’s showing of ‘Nightcap’ with Shannon Sharpe, Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, and “Iso” Joe Johnson, the trio reacted to Belichick’s win and shared their thoughts on why the former NFL coaching legend doesn’t currently have a job in the NFL.
“For whatever reason the NFL didn’t call, you woulda thought a man with those credentials..I mean, look at John Harbaugh. John Harbaugh got fired one day and the next day had a damn job with the New York Giants, with one Super Bowl,” Sharpe said.
Ochocinco gave his thoughts on the matter.
“I don’t think his coaching style would resonate with today’s players…I don’t think players would respond to that extremely well. With the younger generation, I think that’s why, if you look at the coaching and most of the coaching in the NFL, and you look at the landscape outside of Harbaugh, it’s more younger coaches; they’re getting younger and younger, that’s the coaches that the players can actually relate to and understand,” Ochocinco added.
“That old school style, that militant style of coaching, yeah, I don’t think it would go over very well, especially with this generation that is very…sensitive.”
Belichick, after winning last night’s season-opening matchup, failed to give a post-game interview, avoiding reporters as he walked off the field. The move was nothing new, as Belichick has always been a man of few words, adding to Sharpe and Ochocinco’s thoughts on his “old ways.”
As the college football season kicks off, it will be interesting to see how Belichick adapts to a new style of football in his second year.
