This has been a rather unexpected move from the Catalans, as they were expected to continue working towards the signing of the Argentine forward Julian Alvarez, and if they were unable to land him, to go into the new season only with the options they currently have in their ranks.
Another aspect that makes this move somewhat surprising is the injury history of the Brazilian forward. The Brazilian striker suffered a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament on 12 January, 2025, while playing for Arsenal against Manchester United, at the Emirates Stadium. He was seen leaving the pitch in tears even before the worst fears were confirmed following detailed tests.
After spending almost a whole year on the sidelines, he returned to the pitch for a match against Bruges on 10 December of the same year. Since that time, he has remained available to the Gunners. However, he has not been able to play a lot of minutes, because he is third in Mikel Arteta’s pecking order, behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres, and thus has not been able to regain full sharpness.
However, this was only the third major injury in his career. Before that, he suffered a sprain of the collateral ligament in his right knee in January 2018, but was able to recover without surgery.
Then, in December 2022, he suffered a tear in the meniscus and the collateral ligament of his right knee while playing for Brazil against Cameroon during the World Cup 2022, and spent three months on the sidelines with this injury.
Now, Gabriel Jesus looks set to start another chapter in his career with a move to Barcelona, and a lot would depend on the medical tests that he will have to undergo before finalizing this move.
