Alexis Mac Allister has been loosely linked with a move from Liverpool to Man City, but cold water has been poured on the rumour.

The 27-year-old’s future has been a key talking point for months, amid claims of a potential switch to Real Madrid, following in the footsteps of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate.

City have also emerged as a reported option for Mac Allister, though would make little sense for Liverpool to sell an important player to a direct rival.

“Alexis is not thinking about leaving Liverpool. He wants to stay at the club,” Mac Allister Sr said.

“Liverpool have not started talks to renew Alexis’ contract, but the player’s desire is to continue at the club.”

It’s good news to hear that Mac Allister will remain on Merseyside at a time when the Reds’ midfield squad depth is already lacking.

This is a pivotal season for the Reds’ No. 10, though, following an extremely poor 2025/26 campaign by his standards, and he knows improvements are needed from him and the team.

“I actually spoke with one of the guys in the coaching staff last week about our mentality when we are losing, which is something very, very positive,” Mac Allister said, following Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest.

“But as I said before. We are at Liverpool; there is no transition years. You have to win and that’s what we want.”

Mac Allister cut a leggy figure and lacked his usual midfield influence last term, with some wondering if years of intense football have caught up with him at 27.

If he again struggles this season, not managing to thrive in Andoni Iraola‘s demanding style of play, a decision may need to be made by Liverpool next summer.

At that point, Mac Allister will only have one year left on his current Reds deal, so it will be the natural time to cash in.

On the flip side, he could excel as he did in his first two years at Liverpool, justifying getting a contract extension.
