The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made their decision at backup quarterback, and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels has won the job behind Baker Mayfield.
[NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday](https://x.com/RapSheet/status/2094059951010230362?s=20) that Tampa Bay is moving forward with Daniels as its primary backup, capping an impressive rise for the former Kansas quarterback. Daniels entered training camp competing simply to earn a roster spot, but his play throughout August pushed him past veteran Jake Browning, who the Buccaneers are releasing.
Daniels finished the preseason completing 27 of 44 passes for 239 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He also added 37 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground. The rookie helped spark comeback wins over the Jets and Chiefs before struggling, along with the rest of Tampa Bay’s offense, in Friday’s 19-0 preseason-finale loss to Jacksonville.
At Kansas, Daniels appeared in 49 games across six seasons and completed 734 of 1,193 passes for 9,282 yards, 67 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,445 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Daniels finished his Jayhawks career second in program history in passing yards and passing touchdowns while becoming one of only two Kansas players to surpass 10,000 yards of total offense.
