Manchester City academy defender Stephen Mfuni has joined Coventry City on loan for the 2026/27 season, it has been confirmed.

Mfuni has been with Manchester City since the U9s, joining the academy in 2016 at the age of eight and progressing through every age group at the City Football Academy over the decade that followed.
The 18-year-old, born in Wigan and an England youth international at every level from U16s through to U19s, broke into City's U18 squad in the 2023/24 campaign at just 15 years old. He scored in the 4-0 FA Youth Cup final victory over Leeds United at the Etihad Stadium that season.
Mfuni stepped up to the Elite Development Squad in the 2024/25 term, playing a part in City's Premier League 2 title win, before continuing with the side through the first half of 2025/26 season.
The left-footed defender, who operates primarily at centre-back but is comfortable at left-back, made his senior Manchester City debut in January 2026, coming on at half-time for Nathan Ake in the 10-1 FA Cup third round win over Exeter City.
Mfuni to spend 2026/27 in the Premier League with Frank Lampard
Manchester City have confirmed that Mfuni will represent Coventry City for the 2026/27 season in what is the teenager's second loan spell.
His first came in January 2026, when he joined Championship side Watford until the end of the campaign. Mfuni made eight appearances for the Hornets, starting each of them and accumulating 672 minutes across the centre of defence and at left-back, before an injury brought his season to a premature end.
That spell was sufficient to attract interest from a number of clubs this summer, with Watford understood to have wanted to re-sign him before Frank Lampard's Coventry moved for the defender in the closing stages of the window.
Mfuni was included in Enzo Maresca's squad for Manchester City's pre-season tour of east Asia, with the new manager subsequently determining that another loan represented the appropriate next step in his development.
