Cowboys offensive lineman Shiyazh Pete became a feel-good story during the preseason, but not all stories have a happy ending.
Pete’s agent, Brett Tessler, announced on social media that the Cowboys have informed Pete that they are waiving him.
Pete’s postgame speech to the team after a preseason win over the Cardinals on Aug. 21 went viral.
“Well, that was an incredible win,” Pete told the team on a video released by the Cowboys. “I am very fortunate to be amongst you and to play in the same field and wear the same star on our chest. And I’m proud of us, proud of how far we’ve come. Man, this game, fate brought us here as strangers, but this game, this star, this team will make us brothers.”
The undrafted rookie became the first member of the Navajo Nation to sign an NFL contract. More than 140,000 members of the Navajo Nation live in Arizona, so Pete had his own section of supporters for the game and received a standing ovation.
