Packers roster overhaul: Iola’s Kristian Welch released, Kaleb Johnson traded in as Green Bay sets 53-man roster

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WSAW) - Iola native Kristian Welch has been released by the Green Bay Packers, following a seven-solo-tackle performance this preseason in his second stint with the team.

The move was one of several the Packers made as the team set its official 53-man roster.

Jacobs update

-------------

The NFL has placed running back Josh Jacobs on the commissioner exempt list after two misdemeanor charges were filed against Jacobs last week.

Jacobs will not be placed on the Packers’ initial 53-man roster and will not be allowed to practice or attend games with the team. He will, however, still be paid and, with the team’s permission, be allowed at their facility.

The duration of Jacobs’ stay on the exempt list is indefinite and up to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The list is not a final disciplinary action nor a formal suspension, meaning once Jacobs is released from the list, he could still face suspension from the league.

Trades

------

The Packers traded quarterback Kyle McCord to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round pick. McCord is now the backup for Malik Willis in Miami.

The Packers used that pick to acquire second-year running back Kaleb Johnson from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Johnson has yet to score his first NFL touchdown. While playing for the Hawkeyes in 2024, Johnson was named Big Ten Running Back of the Year and received All-American honors. He also set the Iowa single-season touchdown record with 23.

The Packers also acquired tight end Mark Redman from the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a 2028 seventh-round pick. Redman has yet to see any regular season action but caught six preseason passes for 63 yards.

PUP list

--------

Micah Parsons and Luke Musgrave have been added to the physically unable to perform list.

Roster additions

----------------

Undrafted free agent J. Michael Sturdivant has made the roster, marking the Packers’ 22nd straight season adding at least one undrafted rookie to their opening roster.

Roster cuts

-----------

Safety Mark Perry was released. Perry grabbed a preseason interception against Denver and had a fourth-and-goal stop against Pittsburgh.

Will Sheppard has also been released, following an 81-yard punt return for a touchdown in the Packers’ preseason finale.

Kisean Johnson has also been released. Johnson hauled in two touchdowns on Friday, including the game-winner with 20 seconds to go.
