The Chargers changed their mind on Tony Jefferson, keeping the veteran safety on their 53-man roster rather than releasing him. After making two trades that sent players elsewhere Sunday, the Bolts had roster space for Jefferson (per ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter). The Bolts have used the practice squad to toggle Jefferson on and off the roster during his L.A. years, so this about-face may not be especially significant.
If nothing else, Jefferson’s unretirement is a bit underrated. It is rather fitting the 34-year-old safety is back after a near-release, as he has made two comebacks to continue his career. Jefferson was out of football in 2020 due to injury trouble, and he retired in 2023 to become a Ravens scout. Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz coaxed him out of retirement in 2024, and the 11-year veteran has played 21 Chargers games (12 starts) since.
Colson was on track to become a Week 1 starter in 2025, but a season-ending injury nixed those plans. A year later, the former Harbaugh Michigan charge is on the waiver wire. The Chargers will see their injury-activation count drop from eight to six because of their Matlock and Taylor designations.
