Patriots Reveal Official 53-Man Roster With Several Notable Surprises image

The New England Patriots have made their decisions. New England revealed its initial 53-man roster Sunday night following a busy weekend that included multiple trades, difficult cuts and several surprising outcomes.
The key word is “initial.”
The Patriots can continue altering the roster through waiver claims, free-agent signings and other transactions before their regular-season opener. New England sits 31st in the waiver order after reaching the Super Bowl last season, however, making it more difficult to land coveted players released by other teams.
For now, the group announced Sunday represents the roster Mike Vrabel and the Patriots intend to carry into the 2026 season.
Drake Maye will lead an offense that looks significantly deeper than it did only a few years ago. Tommy DeVito secured the backup quarterback role, while seventh-round rookie Behren Morton made the team as a developmental third option. Keeping Morton allows the Patriots to maintain control of the rookie and use him as their emergency quarterback on game days.
Patriots Make Notable Offensive Decisions
New England’s running back room changed shortly before the roster deadline. The Patriots acquired Corey Kiner from the Arizona Cardinals for a 2028 seventh-round pick, immediately installing him behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. The trade left Lan Larison, Hassan Haskins, JaMycal Hasty and Jam Miller without roster spots.
The receiving group features A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III.
Williams strengthened his roster case with touchdown receptions of 69 and 45 yards during the preseason. His emergence also helped make Kayshon Boutte expendable before New England traded Boutte to the Houston Texans.
Undrafted rookie Tanner Arkin produced another notable roster victory. The Patriots kept Arkin after experimenting with the tight end at fullback during the preseason. His ability to block, contribute on special teams and provide depth behind Reggie Gilliam gave New England a reason to retain him.
The Patriots also kept 10 offensive linemen. Marcus Bryant was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return, while recently acquired tackle Walter Rouse made the initial roster.

Harold Landry III Absence Creates Immediate Concern
The biggest question on defense remains at edge rusher. Harold Landry III will open the season on the physically unable to perform list, requiring him to miss at least the first four games. That leaves Dre’Mont Jones, Elijah Ponder, Gabe Jacas and seventh-round rookie Quintayvious Hutchins as New England’s four active edge defenders.
Hutchins beat out 2025 fifth-round pick Bradyn Swinson for a roster spot after recording a game-sealing strip-sack against the Philadelphia Eagles during the preseason. The Patriots also chose youth at cornerback. Karon Prunty, Channing Canada and Charles Woods made the team behind Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III and Marcus Jones.
One of the most surprising cuts came at safety. John Saunders Jr. did not make the roster despite leading New England with five interceptions in training camp practices. The Patriots instead kept Kevin Byard III, Craig Woodson, Jaylen Reed and Dell Pettus.
Bryce Baringer made the team as the lone punter, although his health remains worth monitoring. Special teams captain Brenden Schooler will begin the season on the non-football injury list and must miss at least four games.
New England’s roster may continue changing, but Sunday’s announcement offered the clearest picture yet of the team Vrabel will take into his second season.
The Patriots are deeper, more talented and dealing with much different expectations after reaching the Super Bowl. Their next challenge is turning the roster on paper into another championship contender.
