FC Twente’s Ruud Nijstad picked an inconvenient moment to remind everyone why Barcelona want him.

The 18-year-old Twente defender scored a stunning goal in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Cambuur, driving forward from deep before curling a finish into the top corner.

It is exactly the kind of moment that travels fast online, and it lands just days after Barcelona had made contact with Twente over a potential deal.

Twente, for their part, have already said no.

Barcelona enquired about Nijstad

As reported before, Barcelona’s approach did not get far, as Twente rejected the offer outright, with technical director Erik ten Hag unwilling to sell a player who has become an important part of his defence.

What a goal by Ruud Nijstad. The 18-year-old LCB who plays for FC Twente is being heavily linked with FC Barcelona.

Nijstad has started Twente’s last five matches and played a role in the club’s run through the Conference League preliminary rounds.

Notably, this was not the first time his name has come up at Barcelona either.

He was already linked with a move during the winter transfer window, though that interest was framed differently, as a signing for Barcelona’s reserve team rather than a first-team addition.

That window ultimately produced a different outcome, as Barcelona ended up signing centre-back Juwensley Onstein instead, a player regarded as having strong potential but who arrived after a long injury layoff.

Barcelona keeping a close eye

It goes without saying that Barcelona are currently recruiting.

Their scouting network is actively working across Europe, South America and Africa, and the club’s recent transfer activity, particularly at youth level, shows a clear appetite for signing talented teenagers before their value climbs further.

The fact that Twente have already rejected one offer does not necessarily close the door.

Interest that resurfaces across two separate transfer windows, first for the reserves, now for a more prominent role, suggests Barcelona see genuine long-term value in Nijstad rather than a passing scouting note.

Now, his wonder goal could give those sitting in the Barcelona offices another reason to tighten the scouting.
