Miami Dolphins news: Dolphins roster cuts and trades

The Miami Dolphins spent the weekend trimming their roster from the 90-man preseason allowance down to the NFL’s 53-man regular-season limit. The league’s cutdown requirements led to nearly 1,200 players being waived, released, or placed on reserve lists. Sunday was a rough day around the NFL and tough decisions had to be made.

In Miami, one of those tough decisions was veteran linebacker Tyrel Dodson, who was released after recording 129 tackles for the team last season. Dodson was acquired by the Dolphins during the 2024 season when he was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks. Now he finds himself a free agent.

Miami Dolphins on SI’s Alain Poupart took a closer look at the release of Dodson, explaining:

The logic behind the move is that Dodson didn’t figure into the team’s long-term plans after the selections of Jacob Rodriguez and Trey Moore in the 2026 draft and sacrificing depth at linebacker was worth the cap savings for GM Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley.

If the Dolphins don’t come close to playoff contention in 2026, as most everybody expects, then it’s easy to endorse the move. But they will regret it if somehow they indeed are in contention in the second half of the season and wound up short on linebackers because of injuries.

The ideal scenario for the Dolphins if they were going to move from Dodson obviously would have been to get at least some kind of compensation for him, but apparently his $3 million price tag kept that from happening.
