Chelsea are gearing up for a busy last day of the summer transfer window, particularly as they assess midfield options. Enzo Fernandez hasn’t started as he flirts with a move away while Moises Caicedo’s injury has left them short in the middle of the park. A blockbuster move will be needed either way with the side already looking at a target to replace the Argentine should he depart before the deadline shuts.

Reports Linking Chelsea to Manu Kone

Reporters Fabrice Hawkins and Santi Aouna both tend to be rather accurate this summer, particularly when dealing with Ligue 1 or the French National team. The two have today sent out exclusives that link Chelsea to a move for AS Roma and France midfielder Manu Kone as they look to strengthen the middle of the park.

Aouna particularly notes that this is a move being considered if Fernandez departs for Manchester City which means it may run on to the deadline if the Cityzens try to play games. Described as a “monster” box-to-box presence, Kone is an effective deeper midfielder when it comes to ball progression and carrying, while also having a defensive edge to his game when needed.

The Last Word

It would appear that the Blues are in a bit of an interesting position when it comes to their midfield business. They’re clearly lacking a body or two and Kone would replace Fernandez but there are some doubts about whether he’d be enough. With Jordan Henderson’s arm broken and Romeo Lavia unreliable over three years, the recent links to Lamine Camara showed an initiative to add two strong midfielders this summer.

Aouna himself has now clarified that the club will only add one midfielder instead of two, which means it is a choice between Kone or Camara. This could still raise questions about the available depth if Caicedo’s injury is bad.
