More fallout from Kevin Danso’s decision that he wants to leave the club. According to Fabrizio Romano (sigh), Tottenham are working on a deal to sign out-of-favor Chelsea central defender Tosin Adarabioyo should Danso end up being sold to Sunderland or another club before the end of the transfer window.
You might remember that Tottenham were linked with Adarabioyo a couple of years ago when, IIRC, Ange Postecoglou was still gruffly prowling the sidelines. (My memory is hazy on this point, but I remember we were linked.) He ended up at Chelsea and made 20 starts in all competitions in 2024-25, including the Club World Cup. But Chelsea, as we all know, have about a billion central defenders on their books and Tosin found his playing time cut significantly last season — just 795 minutes in the Premier League last season.
Adarabioyo is a… fine fourth central defender, I guess (and people are going to disagree with that statement a LOT), but honestly I just don’t understand the point in spending money for a fourth CB that will definitely be a backup when we have two homegrown, club-trained central defenders who have impressed in the past in Jun’ai Byfield and Malachi Hardy. A fourth CB is not going to get a lot of minutes except in the event of injury, considering that Spurs are not in European competition. Now I can hear the sneers of “My goodness, we certainly don’t expect ANY Spurs defenders to get injured this season”, but honestly why spend the money when we can develop a youth player, or at least figure out what we have before the January window? Doesn’t make much sense to me, but then again not a lot of what Spurs have done has made sense to me from a long-term squad building perspective.
