Jamie Carragher's bankruptcy petition explained
High Court petition: Records show HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) filed a bankruptcy petition at the High Court against former Liverpool footballer Jamie Carragher. The formal legal document explicitly names him by his full legal name, James Lee Duncan Carragher, while listing him as a litigant in person during the proceedings.
Statement from Carragher's team: “This is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it. It is understood that the matter will not proceed any further, and will be resolved imminently," a spokesperson told the Mirror.
HMRC response: HMRC declined to comment on individual cases due to confidentiality laws. A HMRC spokesperson said: “We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort."
Lucrative punditry career: Since retiring from football in 2013, Carragher has established a high-profile media career, reportedly earning up to £1million a year as a Sky Sports analyst. He also works for CBS Sports and frequently features on The Overlap podcasts.
Net worth: The former Liverpool defender's net worth has previously been estimated at over £16m. During his illustrious playing career with the Reds, Carragher reportedly earned as much as £5m per year at his peak.
Monday Night Football return: Despite the attention surrounding the bankruptcy petition, Carragher is set to continue his broadcasting duties. The 48-year-old is scheduled to return to Monday Night Football, alongside Thierry Henry and presenter David Jones, as part of Sky Sports' extensive coverage of Aston Villa vs Arsenal, with the programme set to begin at 6.30pm.
