Liverpool have rejected successive offers for Cody Gakpo and Trey Nyoni.
Gakpo appeared to be on the verge of a switch across the Premier League to Manchester City, who had snared Tottenham in the race to land the winger.
Bradley Barcola’s arrival, confirmed on Monday, was expected to deal a hammer blow to the Netherland international’s first-team prospects at Anfield.
He was understood to favour a move to the Etihad Stadium over north London, where ex-teammate Andy Robertson now plies his trade.
However the Reds have turned down an £80 million bid from City for the Gakpo with little more than 24 hours remaining to the transfer deadline.
Andoni Iraola’s side rebuffed a deal worth £75M upfront with the remainder in add-ons that appears to have all but ended the pursuit of the 27-year-old.
Liverpool have also fended off an approach for midfielder Nyoni, who was the subject of an ambitious late move from Nottingham Forest.
Last weekend’s visitors to Anfield, who claimed a 2-2 draw, turned to Nyoni after their deal for Everton’s Harrison Armstrong was pulled due to fan unrest.
However the Tricky Trees’ offer of a £30M package for 19-year-old failed to find favour with Iraola understood to consider him a key part of his squad.
Elsewhere, Stefan Bajectic has ended a six-year stay with Liverpool to rejoin boyhood club Celta Vigo on a permanent transfer worth around £1M.
Bajcetic made a total of 22 appearances during his time at Anfield, which was beset by injury problems, and was set to be out of contract next summer.
